About
Registrations are now open for the Disaster Challenge Final, taking place in tandem with Natural Hazards Research Australia's first Natural Hazards Research Forum. This will take place during the the United Nations International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The Disaster Challenge Final will bring the three finalists together to pitch their brilliant ideas to an audience of emergency managers and disaster preparedness experts. Here, judges will choose one winner.
The Final is an open public, in-person event but registrations are a must. Please note, if you are already registered to attend the Natural Hazards Research Forum, you do not need to register for the Disaster Challenge Final as it is already included.
The judges have chosen three finalists from the many impressive submissions to the inaugural Disaster Challenge:
- ‘Mobilising local culturally and linguistically diverse stakeholders and gatekeepers for disaster response’ – from Jyoti Khatri K C (Queensland University of Technology)
- ‘Tourist and tourism worker education via wifi-activated captive portals’ – from Mark Owens (CFA) and Dr Kamarah Pooley (Fire and Rescue NSW)
- ‘Beacon of hope’ – from Jane Toner, Sheridan Keegan, Ahmed Qasim, Lynn Lue-Kopman, Winty Wang, Manori Dissanayaka (Griffith University) and Cris Hernandez-Santin (RMIT University)
These finalists will be supported with academic and industry mentors to bring their ideas to the next level and pitch them at the Disaster Challenge Final, where one winner will be chosen.
