Resilient Makati as Global Leader for DRRM

Yearly, the City Government of Makati through the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office observes the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) to promote a global culture of disaster risk reduction during the month of October. From 2018, the City celebrates IDDRR by involving all stakeholders through the conduct of a Family and Community Resilience Fair. Considering the current limitations due to the current pandemic, the Makati DRRM Office will conduct a Virtual Family and Community Resilience Fair. The month-long activities are designed to capacitate Makatizens (Makati residents) so that they will be able to help themselves and help others in times of disasters. In addition, it will also showcase the city’s efforts in strengthening the DRRM initiatives through international collaboration. Also, these activities promote “self-help, mutual help and public help” behavior which was inspired from the learning through the city’s partnership with Yokohama (Japan).

Makati City also aligns with this year’s international theme which focused on substantially enhancing international cooperation to developing countries through adequate and sustainable support to complement their national actions for implementation of the present Framework by 2030. Hence, the City has an opportunity to acknowledge the progress we have made toward reducing disaster risk and to highlight the importance of vertical and horizontal cooperation for resilience. As part of the culminating activity, the Makati DRRM Office in partnership with CITYNET Yokohama and the United Nations Office for DRR (UNDRR) will hold an online talk show to look back on their collaboration, how it help improve our initiatives, and how it can be replicated by other cities and agencies here and abroad. The said culminating activity will also serve as a platform to showcase how investments on international partnerships and cooperation can be translated into localized DRR strategies with benefits transcending to the resilience of the collaborating parties’ stakeholders.
