About
The Avoidable Deaths Network (ADN) will launch its Junior Champion Magazine, Volume 4 on October 13, 2025, to mark the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction's (UNDRR) International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR). This special edition, with the ISSN 2759-0380, will be unveiled during a virtual event at 2:00 PM BST.
The ADN Junior Champion Magazine was first launched in 2023 under the Future Leader Scheme. It is a platform for children and youths to share their stories from the frontlines of climate change and extreme weather. Guided by subject-specific experts, each issue explores a timely theme. For this volume, Dr. Yitzu Lin from National Chi Nan University, Taiwan, served as the guest editor.
This edition aligns with the IDDRR theme, "Fund Resilience, Not Disasters," by focusing on earthquakes and typhoons in Taiwan. As a highly disaster-prone region, Taiwan is a powerful case study in resilience. The Magazine highlights the lived experiences of young people who have faced these risks and demonstrates how local schools are vital in building community resilience. The articles, written in collaboration with teachers from Chungpu Junior High and Shuang Xi Elementary School, show that proactive measures save lives and reduce the human and economic costs of disasters.
These school children reflected on their lessons from the classroom, home safety practices, and community preparedness initiatives. Despite the anxieties earthquakes can bring, their contributions carry urgent messages about the importance of investing in resilience before disaster strikes. This volume provides a platform for the next generation to articulate their perspectives, fears, and aspirations, showing how they are already envisioning safer schools and communities. Teachers and mentors affirm that amplifying children's reflections is not only vital for today's preparedness, but also for nurturing tomorrow's culture of resilience.
