Organizer(s) United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction - Kobe Office
Date

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Office in Japan, jointly with the UNIC Tokyo, Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA), will organize "International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction" Commemorative Webinar on 19 October 2021.

Time

17:00-18:30 Japan Standard Time

Language: Japanese (Japanese-English simultaneous interpretation available)

Japan and the rest of the world are facing increasingly severe and frequent climate-related hazards in recent years due to climate change. Disaster risk reduction has been a significant area of focus in Japan’s diplomatic efforts, in which Japan can leverage the knowledge, experience, and technology it has garnered over a long history of battling disasters. The adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in the same year (2015) as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement indicate that disaster risk reduction is closely related to climate change countermeasures. This webinar will look at the future of disaster risk reduction and the ways in which Japan can demonstrate leadership within the international community going forward.

Ms. Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, will give the keynote speech, followed by discussions among front-line practitioners and experts on such topics as cooperation between the United Nations and Japan in disaster risk reduction, Japan’s contributions to global efforts for disaster risk reduction, and the international community’s expectations of Japan.
