Ghana quiz competition to celebrate the 2020 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR)
The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) in partnership with the National Disaster Management Organization, the Africa Youth Advisory Board on Disaster Risk Reduction (AYAB DRR), and Accra office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) present the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR) quiz competition.
IDDRR is a day set aside by the United Nations (UN) to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster risk reduction. Celebrated on the 13th of October each year, it aims to show how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness on the importance of reducing risks.
The 2020 target is Target E: “Substantially increase the number of countries with national and local disaster risk reduction strategies by 2020” which lays the foundation for the implementation of the Sendai Framework and is closely linked with Priority for Action 2: “Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk.” Consequently, the 2020 IDDRR celebration is themed "IT'S ALL ABOUT GOVERNANCE"
To commemorate this celebration, a Quiz competition is being planned among Senior High Schools (SHS) in Ghana. The quiz will test the basic knowledge of the students’ on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), especially, earthquake and COVID-19. In addition, knowledge on national, regional, and international policies on DRR and their linkage to global development agendas will also be tested.
This quiz competition is to educate the public on building a more equitable and sustainable future, and how making investments in prevention and preparedness is a necessary part of systematic efforts to increase resilience to disaster.
